Dear LOJ Supporters & Members of the Lynchburg, VA Community,

In light of the coronavirus and the effect it is having on the United States and its infrastructure and economy, LOJ is partnering with a local restaurants and churches in Lynchburg, Virginia to provide relief for the Lynchburg community.

Our vision is an equitable distribution of food that ensures no one in the Lynchburg area goes hungry and no food is wasted. Our focus is to develop a holistic approach that also fosters relationships with and among some of our most vulnerable and overlooked community members. We also have no intention of reinventing any wheels or doing our own thing…we want to affirm and support what is already working and identify gaps that need to be filled. In order to accomplish this, we’re partnering together with local churches, restaurants, community leaders, and organizations to provide evening meals for elderly, homeless, and low-income individuals and families throughout Lynchburg. Our goal is to utilize a simple model that is replicable, scalable, and sustainable so that we can do more together long-term. Here’s the idea:

  1. Donation – We’re working with a local non-profit, LOJ Ministries, to collect food donations especially, but also monetary donations to fund this project. We’ll also look to assess and acquire any surplus inventory available at local restaurants, farms, food banks, and other organizations.
  1. Connection – We’re developing a network of churches across Lynchburg who will connect with individuals and families in their communities and congregations, identify needs, and then place an “order” (number of meals needed, allergies, aversions) at the local restaurant with which they have been partnered.
  1. Preparation – We’re collaborating with local restaurants who will utilize their kitchen and donated food to prepare those “orders” for the churches with which they have been partnered.
  1. Distribution – We’re mobilizing volunteers through our church network who will then pick up those meals and personally transport and distribute them to the individuals and families whose needs they have identified.

There is no doubt a rapidly growing need for food and community all throughout Lynchburg…and this isn’t just a coronavirus thing. Hunger and isolation will be around long after covid-19 is history! So…we are simply going to start doing our part with what we have and where we are right now to whatever degree we are able. For now, we’ll be sending meals out on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings. But we are actively seeking out donors, churches, restaurants, organizations, and volunteers who want to be part of this solution as well. As a community, we will work together to replicate, scale, and sustain this Community Kitchen so that no one in the Lynchburg area goes hungry and no food is wasted.

LOJ Ministries will be taking donations of food that will be sent to our partner restaurants to prepare and distribute to those in need. Monetary donations are also welcome; the money will be used to purchase food to prepare and distribute. We will be working with local churches and and nonprofit organizations to distribute food.
